The leading Internet presence, managed hosting and cloud computing service company Arsys has reduced its energy consumption by 20% in the past year, since its new Data Center came online in July 2009. This has resulted in a reduction in electricity consumption of approximately 300,000 kWh per month, including both the electricity consumed by servers and that required to cool them. That amount of production by power utilities would have resulted in the emission of several tonnes of CO2 per month.

In recent months, Arsys has undertaken various energy efficiency projects at the new Data Center to consolidate its technology platforms through virtualised environments and the cloud hosting platform. The number of servers required, and therefore the energy consumed, is thus reduced without affecting the technology services marketed by the company.

In the words of Olof Sandstrom, General Manager for Operations of the company, “this Data Center has enabled us to undertake intensive server virtualisation projects and reduce the total number of actual, physical production servers by around 800, while increasing our levels of service and the reliability of our platforms. We intend to continue working on these lines to cut the number of actual servers by a further 400”.

The Arsys Data Center incorporates advanced technology that reduces the electricity consumption of servers. “By combining latest generation UPSs, chillers, climate control units with automatic cold regulation and ventilation, open towers and sealed off, chilled aisles in the technical room, we have set up a system with enormous potential for configuration and adjustment which can reach an annual average PUE of less than 1.6, even though it is not yet performing at full capacity”, explained Sandstrom.

Arsys is optimising all its technological and industrial resources to reduce the environmental impact of hosting and maximise reliability and energy efficiency in the services that it has launched onto the market and in the customised ICT architecture solutions that it develops from medium and large sized corporations.

Arsys is already planning to expand its modular Data Center in response to increasing demands for its services.

About Arsys
Arsys is a leader in technology and innovation which provides Internet presence services, managed hosting, cloud computing and advanced solutions for corporate customers and individuals. Arsys has over 250,000 customers and manages over 680,000 domains. The company is at the top of the ranking in its sector in Europe and is pioneering the development of Spain’s first commercial cloud hosting platform.

Hewlett-Packard (www.hp.com) has introduced its patent-pending HP Flex DataCenter (www.hp.com/services/flexdc), offering a way for businesses to cut capital investment requirements for the design and building of data centers in half while decreasing their carbon footprint by 14 percent.

According to HP’s Tuesday announcement, FlexDC offers a standardized, modular approach to designing and building data centers that allows clients to replace traditional data center designs with a flexible solution that can be expanded as needed, while conserving resources.

“Clients, such as financial service providers, government entities, and cloud and colocation hosts, will find the scalable and modular nature of HP FlexDC a compelling option,” HP technology services chief technology officer Kfir Godrich said in a statement. “HP can help clients innovate the way they build and operate a greenfield data center for greater savings over its life span.”

According to the company, FlexDC is based on a “butterfly” design. It features four prefabricated quadrants, or modules, which that stem off a central administrative section. The offering uses industrial components to improve cost efficiencies as well as a streamlined building process with a variety of options for power and cooling distribution.

The buildings that comprise the “Butterfly” architecture include four quadrants and a central support area. Each quadrant has a total critical load capacity of 800 kW.

The prefabricated, standardized components shorten the time it takes to build and deploy a data center, resulting in lower capital costs and faster time to market. The modular design extends clients’ ability to increase scalable capacity, while retaining specified levels of reliability and redundancy.

Specific configurations optimize the use of power and cooling resources to lower energy and water use, enabling clients to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and a facility’s carbon footprint. With the mechanical systems being air-cooled, as opposed to water-cooled, saves clients power and potentially millions of gallons of water annually.

Based on research conducted in Charlotte, NC, FlexDC was able to reduce a data center’s carbon footprint by 14 percent. This may be different in other locations based on factors such as climate.

HP FlexDC is available through HP Critical Facilities Services (www.hp.com/go/cfs), and pricing varies according to location and implementation.

Zen Internet, an internet service provider, today re-launched its website www.zen.co.uk as part of its continual improvements to its online presence. The company avers that design improvements have been made to the site and new navigation introduced, making finding the right information quickly, much easier for visitors to the site.

It states that additionally, the product and service information has been split into customer segments. Tailoring the information on these pages will further enhance a visitor’s browsing experience. The Knowledge Base and the Support Forum have also been updated to reflect the new design. The Knowledge Base is the online resource that includes help and support articles. The Support Forum is the online community area where its customers can discuss aspects of their service and other topics. The company adds that further enhancements to these areas are planned in the near future.

It mentions that it is also today launching the official company Twitter account, @zeninternet. An official company Facebook presence is planned for launch later in the summer. Company tweets are likely to include: latest company news, awards, status alerts, plus any general commentary regarding the company. The company says that visitors may provide feedback about the changes to the site, through the feedback link on the footer of every page of the website.

“These new developments are just part of the ongoing improvements in our online presence. The new look website aims to make it easier for visitors to browse the site and find the information they are looking for. We are also really excited about launching our presence on Twitter and look forward to networking and communicating with the growing social media community,” said Andrew Saunders, Head of Product Management and Marketing, Zen Internet.

The company has been offering a wide variety of services since its inception back in 1999. In an effort to remain competitive, PacificHost has dropped the disk space and bandwidth limit for its web hosting and business hosting services completely. Additionally, the previous Premium Hosting plans have been changed to Business Hosting for better clarification.

With the drop in service limits, PacificHost is now provisioning servers running with the new E5620 Processor. New servers for its Web Hosting and Business Hosting are running as Dual Processor, Quad Core servers. This comes with the increased demand placed on the servers with social media scripts such as Magento, PHPmotion, Dolphin and others.

“PacificHost has been growing rapidly despite the economy. The enhancement to our services comes with our increase in hardware specs for our servers. Since our service caters to start-ups and developers, I believe it was important to make sure that we could meet the ever-growing demand for these power-hungry websites. PacificHost has gained a reputation for providing hosting without the oversold servers or constantly failing hardware, and that is how I intend to keep it,” said PacificHost President Thomas Perry.

With the limits removed, the company also lowered its pricing to $2.49 for the smallest hosting plan. With this, a 3rd billing cycle was added to all plans in order to meet the growing demand for longer payment terms.

iomart Hosting is working with BETT 2010 award winners Manic Monkey to deliver an interactive English language learning system called Little Bridge which allows children to explore a safe virtual world where they can learn the language and join an English speaking community of Young Learners.

Sarah Haran, MD of iomart Hosting, said: “The appetite for cloud-based learning delivery in the Far East continues to grow and we are excited to be helping yet another innovative education provider to deliver its online products into that market.”

Emma Rogers, chief executive of Manic Monkey, said: “Korea has got an incredibly strong market culture in education and there is huge pressure on children to succeed academically. English is the language of the world and so we saw there was a substantial market to deliver our products in a virtual environment.”

Little Bridge is a SaaS-based Virtual Learning Environment so it needs to be available to users at all times. iomart Hosting was chosen to provide the hosting platform for Little Bridge because of its links with the Asian market through its Content Delivery Network partner: CDNetworks.

Mike Richardson, responsible for Global Online Strategy at Manic Monkey, added: “What was so important to us about iomart Hosting was their ability to work closely as a support partner. They were really pro-active. They had a clear vision of how they would deliver the project and they were great collaborators. It was a really good experience working with them. There was absolutely no pain.”

Manic Monkey already provides popular education material via CD-Rom, with integral print packages to schools around the world. Schools and individual parents can buy their products and access material online.

The two companies will continue to work together to develop other opportunities in the Far East. There are plans to deliver Little Bridge to Hong Kong, Thailand, as well as the Japanese and Chinese markets in the near future.

iomart Hosting works with a growing number of key education providers including London School of Economics and ufi/learndirect while Netintelligence, its e-security brand, is providing the safety software for the UK Government’s Home Access project to supply laptops and broadband access to children from low income families in England and Wales.

iomart Hosting is part of iomart Group plc which earlier last month (June 2 2010) announced its full-year results showing a 55% increase in revenues and a doubling of its hosting customers.

About iomart Hosting

If you are want to set up a business online, you need a website, with good content, the best, clear presentation and the best web hosting. Good web hosting can make all the difference in the world as far as your traffic is concerned. If your visitors feel their patience is getting tested while they are waiting for your page to load, you will lose their interest and they will leave.

The problem is, a lot of people get intimidated with the thought of having to create their own website, so they outsource this job to professionals. While this is a viable option, it is often an expensive one because web designers charge quite a lot. Of course, if you are the more adventurous type and like a challenge, you may want to try your hand at doing one yourself – even if you have
never attempted one before.

The good news is that, today, with Wordpress, almost anyone can design and set up their own website. There are hundreds of free Wordpress themes and templates available – along with free plugins to help automate the process, and you don’t have to be a super-geek to do all that. Still, it helps to have some help and guidance along the way – especially if it comes free.

Bestwebhostingforall.com is a website that addresses this need – to provide a resource for people just starting out in building their own websites. There are tips and resources to go step by step. For example, the first step is: how to register your domain. At the site, there is a sincere and patient effort to explain to someone just getting started out – why it is important to spend some time doing keyword research, how to use the keyword tool in Google, what to look for amongst the various web hosting providers to see which ones have the best web hosting services, a detailed web hosting comparison chart giving the various pros and cons of the different providers, how to monetize your website so it makes you an income, etc.

Next they tell you how to set up your DNS, install Wordpress, how to use various Wordpress plugins, and market your website

effectively and competitively in the search engines – using methods like SEO, why tools like an autoresponder are essential to

your website, where to study internet marketing, which tools are the best to use for SEO analysis, how to get ranked in Google, etc.

In reviewing the website, we found it quite engrossing – with detailed content, in an easy to read language. It seems that new

entrants to the world of website-building just got easier with Bestwebhostingforall.com.

Newtek Web Hosting, the technology services division of Newtek Business Services, Inc., yesterday announced that it has added the Microsoft Web Application Gallery to the list of tools available within the WebControlCenter, their account management application. The company mentions that the Web App Gallery is included for all shared hosting plans hosted on the Windows Server 2008 and IIS7 platform and provides users with easy installation of over twenty popular PHP and ASP.NET-based web applications.

It articulates that Microsoft’s Web App Gallery includes widely used blogging platforms, content management systems, photo galleries, tools, and forum software. And with a 1-click, or near 1-click, installation process for all included apps, users can quickly and easily install the applications of their choice and have them online and fully operational within a few short minutes.

The company avers that its Web App Gallery tool is included free on all new ASP.NET and ColdFusion 9 hosting plans, which are both hosted on Microsoft’s latest web platform, Windows Server 2008. It adds that some of the applications included in the Web App Gallery, and supported by the company, includes WordPress, DotNetNuke Community Edition, Acquia Drupal, Umbraco CMS, phpBB, and Gallery Server Pro to name a few.

“Seeing the huge benefits of giving our customers an easier way to deploy widely used applications, our phenomenal Development Team placed a great deal of time and resources into building out the Web App Gallery tool within the WebControlCenter,” said Bob Cichon, President of Newtek Technology Services. “It not only saves time and makes things easier for designers and developers, but it adds significant value for hosting resellers using our environment for their own clientele.”

Wikileaks (www.wikileaks.org), a collaborative site with the intention of facilitating the free flow of information has reportedly kept crucial information from the public about its own operations, and its secure submission system, a cornerstone of the concept, has been offline for more than three weeks.

Months after Wikileaks director Julian Assange was caught lying about the identities of his organization’s board members, Wikimedia Commons reports that the site’s secure submissions server has been down since June 12 after the organization failed to pony up the $30 fee for its annual Secure Sockets Layer certificate renewal.

Launched in 2007, Wikileaks gained wide media attention recently for releasing a video of journalists being killed by US helicopters in Iraq. Following this attention, Assange was apparently the subject of unwanted attention from authorities. upon his return to his home country, Australia, airport security confronted him, taking his passport and searching his bags.

This incident and others (such as claims that gunman broke into his home in Kenya and attempted to kill him for Wikileaks’ role in exposing government-sponsored killings there — despite little evidence suggesting that it was anything more than a robbery) helps to further establish Wikileaks as a threat to authority. These incidents, however, have led some to the conclusion that Assange may be misreporting these events to make him seem like the target of conspiracies in an effort to stir publicity.
